Large number of parents send their children abroad. The reason is this: speaking English very well is important in Korea.
A lot of people say that if one is good at English one makes money easily in Korea. Even though English is not second language in Korea, many important exam tests applicants’ English ability. Many company also ask English scores like TOEIC, TOEFL and so on, although there does not need English ability at work. A HR manager said that they regarded English scores was an index of applicants’ sincerity. Good English grades was not gotten by hastily studying. Therefore, most of Koreans try to find a way to be good at English. Popular methods is these: studying continuously, starting at child (child’s tongue is flexible), living abroad. So parents send their children abroad for helping them to be good at English.
I deeply understand that they have no option but to do that. However, I have a question about the efficiency. The parents believe that children remain their English ability if they experience aborad life one time. But language ability remains under a condition to use it continuously. Though the children really spoke well abroad, they could forget English in Korea.
In a special case, a professor’s son was born in California and raised there since he became 5 years. After he came back in Korea, he could speak only English. As he went to a kindergarten, he learned and spoke Korean instead of English. Now he is 20 years and forget every single words of English. He and the professor do not believe how a kid, who was born and raised in U.S.A, does not speak English at all. Even if the professor majored child development, she said that child development was really difficult and unpredictable. People regard the case of the professor’s son uncommon. However, it is possible that other children are similar.
The results of researches say similar. If a child ,who is not good at a language, starts second language, the child is slow to learn both of the languages. Studying abroad may not help a child to develop their cognitive ability. Other researches also point emotional side. If children is sent abroad without their parent, they can feel lonely, afraid and depressed. These negative emotions were not good for children.
