The best wedding I ever went to is my cousin’s wedding.
My cousin and his bride met in a voluntary help organization and they were attracted by each other’s dreams for helping others. They decided to marry each other and became volunteers instead of having famous job. It was a difficult decision because they were elites in Seoul National University, people expected them to have a job with a fame and big money. However, they did not want to follow people’s general expectations and they wanted to use their talents for people in difficulties. After graduation, they became teachers of Gandi school which is an alternative school in countryside for adolescents with problems : maladjustment, violence, dropouts in normal school system, and so on. They married at their school in countryside. Their wedding was special, including the place.
First, Their invitation card was normal printed paper. They did not order their cards from professional companies. They just wrote a letter and printed on Han-paper, Korean traditional paper. It was very cheap, simple but special.
Second, they did not wear a wedding suit and a wedding dress. They bought cheap modern Hanbok, Korean traditional costume, and used them as their wedding suits. In Korean wedding, the bride and the groom showed more than two clothes, Western style wedding suits and Korean traditional suits, but they decided to wear only Korean. It was practical.
Third, there were no officiant (minister). They just read their marriage vows and showed us a presentation which included from their birth to their current dreams. Nowadays, weddings without officiant have increased, but that time, it was very exceptional. All of the guests said the wedding was unique.
The wedding was like a small feast. Various people, who were their relatives, coworkers, villagers, the students and their parents, attended to the wedding. The students and their parents prepared some events. The representative of the parents read a letter which included their huge thanks that their children had changed positively. Students also showed their love for their teachers, the bride and the groom, by celebrating performance. Their performance was not good but their thankfulness was shown clearly. The other celebrating performance was a tiny concert with Korean traditional music instruments : Haegeum, Gayageum, Deageum, and so on. Their performance was great and the sounds was fantastic. Especially the sound of Haegeum and Gayageum were wonderful. It was my first experience to hear Korean music instruments that was touching. When I heard the lovely sounds, I wished to learn Gayageum someday.
Although it has already been 10 years since their wedding, it was the best wedding which was simple, unsophisticated and touching I ever went to.
